My work as a map: transit, memory, and inverted lives

Trujillo with his works in the studio.

For over thirty years I have painted to understand what moves within and outside of us, of me. My work is not born from an isolated idea, but from a life experience marked by displacements, changes of place, and the need to find a space of my own.

When I look at a body walking, stopping, or crossing a street, I don't just see a figure. I see a story. I see a decision, a waiting, a loss, a search. I see everything that pushes us forward, even when we don't yet know where we're going.

I paint my story through transit

My artistic work stems from a conviction: movement is a fundamental human right, but it is also an emotional experience. Throughout my career, I have investigated the literal and metaphorical transit of people through the spaces and cities they inhabit.

I have moved from figuration to an increasingly free abstraction. I am not interested in literally describing a scene. I am interested in deconstructing it to find its essence: the rhythm of a displacement, the tension of an encounter, the mark a body leaves when it passes through a place.

I work with light, shadow, texture, and line. I let acrylic, watercolor, layers, and impasto lead part of the narrative. Every stroke becomes a possible direction. Every abstract figure retains something of the person I was, of the person I am, and of all the people who have crossed my life.

Transit: walking to another place

In the Tránsito series, I take this investigation to the movement of bodies. My characters advance, cross paths, separate, and persist. They do not represent a specific person, but a human condition that we all share: we are always walking somewhere.

My own story also appears in these works. I was born and trained in Cuba, a territory of sea, memory, and movement. In 2014, I came to live in Spain. This displacement was not just a geographical change. It transformed the way I looked, worked, and understood my own trajectory.

Deambular II and Deambular III are born from this reflection on movement, the path, and the search for one's own place.

Vidas Inversas: looking at life from another direction

In the Vidas Inversas (Inverse Lives) series, I approach this same experience from a different perspective. I am interested in thinking about the lives that could have been, the paths that diverge, and how a decision can change the direction of an entire existence.

A life is never completely linear. It is made up of advances, setbacks, pauses, and unexpected turns. Sometimes we arrive at a place only to discover that we still carry within us the landscape we left behind. Sometimes we need to look at our history in reverse to understand why we have come this far.

In Shadows I and Shadows II, I explore that ambiguous zone where identity transforms. Shadows are not just an absence of light: they are also memory, possibility, and everything that continues to accompany us as we change.

In these works, I do not try to illustrate my biography. I try to transform it into a visual language that can be shared. The figures, layers, and gestures speak of identity, memory, and belonging, but they also leave space for each viewer to find their own journey.

Every work is a map

Today I understand my painting as a way of narrating without explaining. Each work brings together physical displacements, memories, and artistic decisions. From Cuba to Spain, from the first pieces I signed as Pardillo to those I sign as Trujillo, I have been building a language born from the need to move forward.

I don't just paint what I see. I paint what remains after the journey. I paint the traces, the bonds, and the transformations that accompany us when we change places. That's why I say that each work is a map and each stroke, a trace.

My story is in that map. And perhaps, when someone pauses before one of my paintings, they can recognize in it something of their own movement: the desire to go somewhere else, to start over, or to find themselves.

The journey of the artwork continues

For me, a painting does not end when I sign it and apply its last coat of protective varnish. Its journey continues when it leaves the studio and finds a new space, a new gaze, and a new story to accompany it.

I personally prepare each work for its journey, with premium protection and packaging. I offer free shipping to Spain, Portugal, Europe, and North America, with no minimum amount, so that acquiring an original piece is a carefully managed experience from the studio to its destination.

If any of these works connect with you, you can learn all their details and acquire them directly from their listing. Thus, the map continues: a new work leaves my studio and begins to be part of the life of the person who chose it.
